Common questions

Gynaecomastia surgery recovery - common questions

How long is the compression vest worn?

Most surgeons require 24/7 for 4-6 weeks then daytime-only for further 2 weeks. Compression vests promote skin retraction and reduce risk of seroma or contour irregularities. They are inconspicuous under clothing.

Will my gynaecomastia come back?

Removed glandular tissue does not regrow. However, if the underlying cause (anabolic steroids, certain medications, hormonal imbalance) is not addressed, new tissue can develop. The most common recurrence cause is resumption of anabolic steroid use.

When can I do chest exercises?

No chest exercises (push-ups, bench press, chest fly) for 8-12 weeks. Other upper body work (back, shoulders, arms) at 4-6 weeks. Most surgeons recommend a gradual reintroduction of chest exercises from week 8, working up to full chest workout by week 12.

Will the scars be visible?

Most modern gynaecomastia surgery uses an incision around the lower half of the areolar border, which fades into the colour transition and is essentially invisible at conversational distance. Larger cases may have additional small incisions for liposuction access.

When will I see the final result?

Initial result visible at 2 weeks once swelling reduces. Final shape settles at 8-12 weeks as all swelling resolves and skin retracts. Scars continue to fade for 12-18 months.
